Concrete has high compressive strength, but low tensile strength, bending strength, toughness, low resistance to cracking, and brittle fracture characteristics. To overcome these problems, fiber-reinforced concrete, in which the strength of concrete is improved by inserting fibers, is being used. Ultra-high-performance concrete. Ultra-high-performance concrete is a new type of concrete that is being developed by agencies concerned with infrastructure protection. UHPC is characterized by being a steel fibre-reinforced cement composite material with compressive strengths in excess of MPa, up to and possibly exceeding MPa.

- ). Lisse Netherland: A A Balkema. In this chapter, close-in and contact explosion tests are compiled. Slabs made of normal strength concrete (NSC) and ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) slabs are tested in close-in and contact detonations. The superior blast-resistance capacity of UHPC slabs is.

A compilation of fire test data which shows distinct behavioral differences between high-strength concrete (HSC) and normal strength concrete (NSC) at elevated temperature is presented. The differences are most pronounced in the temperature range of 20 °C to °C.

Fire performance is the ability of a particular structural element (as opposed to any particular building material) to fulfil its designed function for a period of time in the event of a fire.

Concrete proof. The impact of a major fire at Tytherington County High School, Cheshire, was limited due to the fire resistance of the concrete structure. effect of high temperature on the yield strength of steel. Figure 4 shows the effect on the modulus of elasticity. As indicated in the figures, hot-rolled steels (reinforcing bars) retain much of their yield strength up to about °F, while cold-drawn steels (prestressing strands) begin to lose strength at about °F.

Portland cement concrete, in particular high strength concrete, is highly susceptible to spalling in a fire [37]. High strength concretes are generally defined as concretes with compressive strengths above 50 MPa, and are widely used in construction since the late s.

High strength concrete tends to be more susceptible to spalling due to its reduced pore volume and low diffusion of water vapor during elevated temperatures. Research at NIST has demonstrated that high strength concrete with synthetic fibers will have reduced spalling because as fibers melt, they provide paths for vapor to Size: KB.
