The black coloration in eastern gray squirrels and fox squirrels is believed to both stem from a faulty pigment gene. A study published by FEBS Letters in demonstrated how a pigment gene missing a piece of DNA, can be a determinant of a eastern gray squirrel's coat. The emergence of black fur in the eastern gray squirrel is believed to be the result the 24 bp Missing: sebacina.   The chance of catching Lyme disease from an individual tick ranges from zero to roughly 50 percent.
